Ampakines are any substance that stimulates the AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors. This nootropic list only has one category because glutamate receptor agonists are the only current known substances to work as a nootropic.

3. Dopaminergic List

Dopaminergic nootropics are any substance related to dopamine in order to increase cognitive function. Some dopaminergic drugs are excluded from this list because they are prescription stimulants or dangerous illicit drugs. Even though these stimulant substances can enhance alertness and focus, they are not considered nootropic due to their safety issues.

4. Eugeroic List

Eugeroics are a type of nootropic compound that promote or enhance wakefulness. These types of nootropics enhance the function of catecholamine neurotransmitters. They do this without the same addictive potential of many dopaminergic and stimulant drugs. They are however still addictive and therefore should be used with extreme care. Most of these types of nootropics are prescription to help treat excessive daytime sleepiness and narcoloepsy.

5. Nootropic Peptide List

Nootropic peptides are a new area of research. Some of these nootropic peptides have very limited availability in the United States. Many also have very poor oral bioavailability and must be used in other routes (like injected). This makes them highly unpopular as a general nootropic supplement.
